Sight Seeing

We were watching T.V. and it was raining out. A light drizzle that was hardly noticeable. The entrance to the cabin is in the kitchen and we heard the door open. It hit the counter when it opened and made a banging noise.
I said "Hello!" and no one answered. I repeated "HELLO" and said, "Come on in". No answer. I got up and went to see what was the matter. The door was wide open and I saw what I thought was a very large brown dog. I rushed to shut the door, as I didn't want the large animal to come in.
As I was shutting the door, I reached for the outside light switch. Just as it lit the porch , I realized that it was not a large brown dog. It was a small brown bear. Now I am not talking the Constellation Bear, in the Northern hemisphere, I am talking California forest type bear.
As soon as I realized what it was and I knew it was gone, I completely fell apart. I started trembling and saying to Don, (my hubby for a million years) "It was a bear, not a dog, it's a bear. Then I started crying.  I'm not sure he believed me though, till I started shaking all over.
Well then it happened to him, the very next night but when he turned on the porch light, the bear was on the other side of the window looking in at him. He just happened to put his face to the glass to see what was out there and when he turned the light on, he was nose to nose with a bear taller than he. He told me that it was still dark, when he got the light on and realized that it was because the bear was covering the window.
I was already in bed and when he came to bed, he was trembling just as I had been, the night before. My hero!
All turned out well though. We called the Sheriff' office and they soon had the bears in cages and relocating them. We were quite pleased with that.

As of 2000 we have moved away from the mountains but we still have our cabin in the forest. We still spend a lot of time there and look forward to our weekends away from the hustle and bustle of the biggest lil' city in the world. We hope to retire there and be free to look for gold and hiking any time we please. The wild is still quite intriguing and still holds the excitement it always has.
  Hope to see you there.
 M. and D.
